In With the New

One of the things that distinguishes schools from other entities is the cyclical nature of the business.  Each school year brings with it a brand new influx of people — in the case of ZMS, our incoming 5th graders — and with it, a fresh, new beginning.  Optimism reigns supreme when August rolls around, expectations are high, and the slate is clean.  There aren’t many places in life where one gets an annual “do-over,” a chance to pass go and pick up $200.  I am thankful that school is such a place and am reinvigorated each time it happens.

Part of the influx of new people in each school are the staff members hired over the summer.  ZMS has a rather large group of new staff members who have joined us this June and July.  Grade 5 has several newcomers.  Candace Hons comes to ZMS from our own Eagle Elementary, and will be teaching humanities.  Emily Smith comes to us via Carl Wilde Elementary where she also taught 5th grade.  She will be teaching math and science at ZMS.  Also teaching math and science in 5th grade this year will be Brynna Fisher.  Brynna comes to us from George Julian Elementary School.

The sixth grade staff will be joined by Emily Anyaebunam and Ben Cole.  Both will be teaching humanities.  Emily is a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, and recent graduate of Indiana University.  Ben, also an IU grad, comes to us from the Center For Inquiry where he taught fourth grade.

Our special education staff has three teachers joining our ranks.  Libby Staples is our Life Skills teacher.  Libby comes to us from Urbana, IL, where she taught at Thomas Paine Elementary school.  Gina Clayton and Ashley Cave will serve as our 7th and 8th grade resource teachers respectively.  Gina was most recently the 6th grade resource teacher at Westlane Middle School, and Ashley has most recently served as the behavior interventionist at Charles A. Beard.  Additionally, Maddie Bell will be ZMS’s Speech and Language Pathologist.  She comes to us by way of Indiana University, and Southern Illinois University where she completed her Master’s work.

Shawnee Harrigan joins our science team in grade seven.  She comes to ZMS via Holy Spirit Catholic School where she was a middle school science teacher.  This position became available at ZMS as a result of our own Blair Williams assuming the role of ZMS Assistant Principal (and she will be working alongside Mitzi Macaluso, who holds the same title).

Our foreign language staff will be joined by Meredith Wade and Euphrasie Ntala.  Meredith was most recently a Spanish teacher at Western Boone Jr./Sr. High School.  Euphrasie joins ZMS via the International School.  Angie Parker will be joining our counseling crew.  She recently completed her Master of Science in School Counseling at Butler University.  Rounding out our teaching staff additions is Ashley Carney.  Ashley will teach orchestra at ZMS, and she comes to us from Center Grove Middle School and High School where she was the Director of Orchestra.

Not to be outdone, our office staff has several additions.  Michele Durda will be moving from receptionist to attendance secretary.  Assuming receptionist duties will be Jill Lucas.  Also joining the secretarial team are Bethany Hempel and Vickie Perry.  All three of the professionals come to us with front office experience, and have hit the ground running as we prepare for the 2018-2019 school year.
